About Mashad Rugs

The origin and inception of carpet weaving in the handwoven Mashad carpet, documented in manuscripts and historical records, date back about 500 years. During that period, the only notable carpet estimated to have existed was the “Sajjadah” carpet, which Shah Tahmasp presented to Sultan Suleiman. Until recent years, it was preserved in London, but it is currently in the possession of the renowned Qatari collector Sheikh Saud Al-Thani.

Over the past 200 years, Mashhad’s handwoven carpets have experienced remarkable growth in popularity among the people of Iran and worldwide, effectively enhancing its fame and popularity.

Notable Characteristics and Size Range of Mashad Rugs

One notable feature of authentic handwoven Mashhad rugs is their distinct weaving style that sets them apart from rugs produced in other regions of Iran. This unique technique is a fusion of Iranian and Turkish weaving methods, employing two different types of knots. The resulting carpets exhibit remarkable durability, a prominent characteristic of the Mashad hand-knotted rug industry.

Another noteworthy aspect is the intricate design of Mashad carpets, particularly the incorporation of various patterns of Shah Abbasi flowers. These designs have deep roots in authenticity and tradition. The use of high-quality raw materials, especially red dyes, contributes to the distinct allure of antique Mashhad rugs. The specific shade of red used in Mashad  hand-woven carpets distinguishes them from rugs made in other Iranian regions, creating a captivating and unparalleled color palette that genuinely captivates one’s attention.

Typically, the dimensions of authentic Mashad rugs fall within the range provided below (although larger rugs, even up to 100 square meters, exist, they are rarely produced):

  • 300cm x 200cm (9′ 10.11″ x 6′ 6.74″)
  • 350cm x 250cm (11′ 5.82″ x 8′ 2.43″)
  • 400cm x 300cm (13′ 1.48″ x 9′ 10.11″)
  • 500cm x 300cm (16′ 4.85″ x 9′ 10.11″)

Materials and Weaving Techniques, Design and Patterns

Mashhad rugs, mainly traditional handwoven ones, are undoubtedly among the regions in Iran that have consistently maintained high standards of material quality. Typically, a blend of wool and cotton is used in their weaving process, where the pile is made from natural wool, and the warp and weft consist of cotton threads.

A combination of Turkish and Persian knots is employed in the intricate weaving of Mashhad hand-woven rugs. These knots are woven onto the vertical carpet warps, creating a highly sturdy and durable structure. The number of knots per 7 centimeters along the length of a Mashad carpet usually ranges from 30 to 40 knots, varying based on the complexity and intricacy of the design and pattern.

The foundation of patterns in authentic Iranian handwoven Mashhad carpets often features large Shah Abbas motifs, sometimes combined with medallions at the center of the rug, or they can be dispersed without a central medallion. Additionally, subterranean designs, including (bowls & jars) and historical prophets, are woven in this region (located in Kashmar). Furthermore, the Gol-Franag patterns, sparingly found with plain designs patterns in Mashhad rugs, exhibit a touch of modernity in their style.

Techniques for Identifying Mashad Rugs

Genuine Iranian handwoven carpets from Mashhad exhibit a distinctive style that originates from the city’s rich tradition of carpet weaving.

  1. The weaving technique combines Turkish and Persian knots in double format.
  2. The weaving process employs unique colors, such as (red dye) derived naturally from animals and shades of green and blue. Orange tones are often used in the borders.
  3. The intricate designs prominently feature masterful renditions of elements from the grand “Gol Shah Abbas” motif, adding a captivating and enchanting allure to these carpets.
  4. Typically, the names of skillful carpet producers are delicately woven into the upper part of Mashhad rugs, serving as the artisan’s signature.
  5. The use of high-quality wool in crafting these carpets, renowned throughout Iran, is known for its exceptional softness and remarkable sheen. Its short pile length contributes to its delicacy and unique luster.

Mashhad Signature Medallion

It is fitting to acknowledge the significant contributions of renowned and historical designers from Mashhad, Iran, particularly honoring the masterful work of Abdulhamid San’atnegar. He is the designer behind many intricately woven carpet patterns found in the workshop of “Amu Oghli.” He has gained international recognition as a distinguished brand and is a source of pride for the authentic handwoven carpets of Mashhad, Iran.

Another notable workshop among skilled artisans is that of Master Khalil Khadivi, who later gained fame under the guidance of “Zarbaf.” Alongside him, apprentices like the “Shesh Kalani” pursued their craft and later began independent production.

Among the other well-known workshops in the production of handwoven carpets in Mashhad are “Makhmalbaf” and “Saber,” both of which later achieved global acclaim. Mashhadi artists who once wove their names into rugs have elevated these signature carpets to a higher value today.

Silk Highlights in Mashad Rugs

  1. The softness of the carpet surface can be attributed to silk fibers, which are renowned for their exceptional smoothness. The overall plushness of the carpet is achieved by combining silk fibers with slightly rough wool fibers.
  1. Silk fibers in handwoven carpets contribute to heightened brilliance, especially when viewed from different angles. Additionally, they offer a tactile dimension, particularly from a specific perspective.
  2. The finesse of silk fibers, created by a finer knot structure, naturally imparts exceptional quality.
  3. During winter, silk fibers create a form of thermal insulation within the carpet, enhancing the comfort and pleasant walking experience on it.

As a result, the above points constitute the main reasons for opting for natural silk fibers instead of synthetic alternatives.

In weaving the authentic handwoven Mashhad rugs of Persia, high-quality wool is utilized, renowned for its excellence across the country. The warp and weft of these carpets, onto which the design is woven, are often made of cotton, contributing significantly to its durability. The predominant color of these carpets is primarily red, although other colors such as earthy tones, deep blues, and charcoal hues have also been used as solid colors in the background of the carpets. These colors exhibit stability and exceptional quality. In particular, handwoven Mashhad rugs, up to 15 different colors, are sometimes employed in a single piece, adding to the distinctive features that define them.

The red color observed in the carpets of Mashhad, Iran, was historically extracted from the bodies of animals as a natural source. For instance, in the past, the red dye was obtained from the larvae of the red insect (Cochineal), producing a vibrant and non-toxic red hue. This dye was then utilized in dyeing raw wool for carpet weaving. Another reason for the prominence of red is that it is among the predominant colors in authentic Iranian carpets, and Mashhad’s handwoven carpets are no exception to this rule. The color red conveys a sense of energy and self-confidence.
