Details & Story Of This Carpet

Review By: Reza Derakhshesh (Persian Carpet Expert)

Koliai carpets
Koliai carpets are one of the most famous Kurdish handmade carpets. Koliai (Kolyaei) is a small village in the Kermanshah province of Iran. Koliai carpet has a history of 400 years and has 32 special designs and designs. It is registered worldwide through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Koliai rugs are woven often without pre-designed patterns and are based on the weaver’s imagination and the nature and culture of his or her environment.
Nomadic Carpets
Nomadic carpets are hand-woven by nomads and are mostly woven in small sizes due to the necessities of life and special migration conditions. Unlike rural and urban carpets, nomadic carpet weaving machines (Looms) are horizontal and have a very simple construction. Nomadic carpets are thicker and the pile in them is woven with natural wool of sheep, goat, and camel. Tribal weavers artistically perform patterns such as flowers and plants, tools and accessories, animals and birds that can be seen in their surroundings, on their handicrafts. Nomadic rugs have very simple patterns with attractive unique colors and their design is often asymmetrical. The use of geometric patterns to depict animals, flowers is very common in these carpets. If one can translate the symbols and motifs of nomadic carpets, it reveals many facts about the past, culture, and environments of weavers.
About This Nomadic Carpet
This is a 20 years old unique and beautiful nomadic carpet woven by Koliai nomads in Songor. One of the unique features of this handmade carpet is the use of camel wool in it, which is rare among handmade carpets. The main colors used in this carpet are red, yellow, green, and brown, but other colors such as blue and pink can also be seen in it. The rug used for weaving this carpet is horizontal and wooden and the carpet is woven in a nomadic tent. Also, in this carpet, symmetrical knots are used on cotton warp and weft.
The design of this nomadic rug is influenced by the designs of southern Kurdistan of Iran and many geometric patterns have been used in it. In the center of this carpet, the motifs of dishes used to make and drink Arabic coffee can be seen.
